This Present Darkness (Eph. 6:12)

"For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places."--Ephesians 6:12

All too often, I must confess that I forget that I really don't belong here. If I had to describe my daily existence, I would have to say that I probably live more by sight than by faith.

Sometimes I wonder if that isn't exactly what Satan wants for us. As we forget the spiritual realities of life in Christ, we have just made his job easier. He doesn't need to worry about anyone who's already sucked into the life of this world. We are already drugged by the narcotics of greed, pleasure, lust, and complacency.

However, once I start living my life as if this is not my home, once I start making decisions that line up with His will and not my own, I can also expect some opposition. Now we are starting to rebel against the numbing influence of this world. As we wake up from our stupor and begin to embrace the spiritual realities and blessings God has given us through Christ, we also become targets of the enemy.

As Jesus said, we cannot serve two masters. When Satan realizes that we love God more, we also single ourselves out for attack. Sometimes it can be overt. But more often than not, I think it is subtle. But whether it is direct or not, we need His armor. All the time. Every day.

This world is not our home. Let us live in such a way that reflects this truth. But also remember that as we do, be prepared to be challenged. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against a dark power that hates the light.

That is why we need that armor! And by His grace, our God has provided it for us. Use it. Put it on. And then stand firm in it.

For today:

  • In what world do you live? Is spiritual battle an everyday experience for you?
  • Thank God for His provision of spiritual armor. Then pay Him the greatest compliment by actually using it!
