Not Our Own Doing (Eph. 2:8, 9)

"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."--Ephesians 2:8, 9

As humans, we like to think we are in charge. It is one of the oldest lies in the book. Just ask Eve.

But when it comes to salvation, the truth is there is absolutely nothing we can do to attain it. We cannot buy it. We cannot earn it.

It is a gift. This doesn't mean that it is cheap. It just means that it didn't cost us anything.

But it cost Him everything to purchase that gift. And He offers it to us, free of charge. In Asian cultures, it is hard to accept a gift without feeling like you need to return the favor.

But He does not ask for that. He just asks us to accept it, even though it goes against our grain. If we must do something, let us not do something to earn that gift, but employ our efforts in singing His praises, boasting of His goodness to us.

And that's a gift He will accept.

For today:

  • Do you ever feel like you need to earn your salvation? What keeps you from accepting His gift?
  • Take time to receive the gift of salvation. And then open your lips to boast of how much He has done for you to others.
