What's Your Mission? (Part 2): The Great Stewardship
A month ago, I wrote about the Great Commandment and the Great Commission as our primary mandates as God’s people.
I’m realizing I may need to add to that list.
As I was reading through the creation story again, I was struck this time that there is a Great Stewardship as well: to order, fill, and rule over this world (Gen. 1:28). This is a great honor bestowed on humans as image bearers of God (Psalm 8).
Putting these things together then adds another dimension to my understanding.
As His image bearer, I am to be His ambassador (2 Cor. 5:20).
My work is to go out into this world and expend my time, energy, and resources, to continue to expand and build His kingdom here on earth.
While there are many ways I can do this, faithfulness towards this end builds up the body of Christ so that it is firm, mature, and equipped to continue until He comes again (Eph 4:11-16). I can do this by:
choosing to live by faith and not sight in my own life.
exercising my gifts to cultivate the home He has given me.
investing in my children as the future leaders. teaching others the Word and helping them apply it in their domains.
encouraging others to draw near to God in their own ways and seek ways for them to glorify and serve Him and others.
These are just a few ways I can invest my life and steward what He has given me to multiply what has been entrusted to me.
There is a lot of freedom as to means. But whatever the means, I want to invest my life in building up His Kingdom.
It’s already here, even if it isn’t complete yet.
He started the work in creation. He took a chaotic mass and gave it form. He took a lifeless earth and filled it with creatures. He took a dark world and gave it light.
And we get to do the same.
Order. Life. Light.
What a blessing and honor we have been given. By virtue of being human, we have been invited into work that is deeply meaningful and purposeful.
We can start simply by asking Him how we might steward, fill, and further the domains we have been given.
How can I create order—in my life, my home, my family?
How can I give life to those around me?
How can I bring the light of Christ into the places I inhabit?
How can I extend the boundaries of the Kingdom from where I stand?
We don’t need to go overseas or enroll in seminary or become full-time pastors. Whether single or married, kidless or with a house full, at home or abroad, we all have a patch to tend for Him.
The Kingdom is here. Right here, right now.
Let’s live like it today.
